Birth Control Pills Taken Off The Market AKA Discontinued - FAQs

Many birth control pills were discontinued by the manufacturers in June 2018.
Don’t worry! Pandia Health will replace these pills with an exact FDA-approved equivalent as the medication runs out. If you currently are on one of these pills, you will automatically receive the new equivalent pill and there is no action needed.

FAQs

Which pills were discontinued?
The names of the discontinued pills are: MonoNessa, Ortho Tri Cyclen, Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo, TriNessa, TriNessa Lo, Vestura, and Lo Seasonique.

Can I get these from another pharmacy?
No, the manufacturers discontinued these pills and thus no pharmacy will have them once they run out of stock.

Why was the medication discontinued? Is it still safe?
The manufacturers made a financial decision to no longer make the product. The pills that our partner pharmacies provide in their place are FDA-approved, have the SAME active ingredients and dosage, and are safe to take.

What will you replace them with?
Here is the breakdown of the names:

OLD/DISCONTINUED: MonoNessa/Ortho Tri Cyclen/TriNessa
NEW/REPLACEMENT: Tri-Sprintec, Tri-Previfem, Tri-Estarylla, Tri-Mili, Tri Norgestimate/Ethinyl Estradiol, Tri-Linyah

OLD/DISCONTINUED: Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo/ TriNessaLo

Teva (maker of the pill Vestura) is at the number 1-888- 838-2872

Can I read about this online somewhere?
Yes you can see the discontinuation on the FDA website

Are the replacement pills different?
No, they are not. They might have a different color and a different container (rectangular vs. round) but the replacements contain the exact same hormones / active ingredients, same dosage, and are considered equivalent by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are also equally effective!.

Can I request a different medication if I don’t want the FDA-approved equivalent?
If you are using our telemedicine (online doctor visit) service, our team is always happy to discuss with you other options. Otherwise, you need to speak to your provider.
